The first enrolled 25 students in speciality " Technology of mechanical engineering, metal-cutting machine tools and tools" were admitted to the metallurgical faculty in 1959.
The admission of the students was realized in two systems – a special group with the term of training 4 years and 10 months consisting of persons having minimum two years of industrial experience on a chosen speciality, i.e. machine-operator, mechanics, workers of machine-building enterprises, and a group of day-time and evening-time students (having finished school) with the term of training 5 years and 6 months, who for 1,5 years worked at machine-building factories and were trained in the evening form, and then continued study in the day time form.
For the development of the speciality and graduation of highly skilled experts the administration and the faculty were realized a great work to attract a qualified teaching staff from the leading higher schools and advanced machine-building enterprises of Russia.
The formation of the chair «Technology of mechanical engineering» began in September, 1962.
The prime task of that period was the completion of the professorial-teaching chair staff. This task was decided by the attraction to the chair of the experts, directed by the central higher schools of the country.
It is necessary to note, that at the chair research work has been constantly carried out together with ministries and machine-building enterprises, and this allowed to defend a number of candidates’ and doctors’ dissertations.
The results of the research work is not only multi-milliard economic benefits, but also 16 monographies, more than 100 manuals and more than 1000 articles in scientific magazines. The scientific researches of the chair are developed in the following directions: thread-cut, electro-contact processing, faltering grinding, standardization and certification, tooth-roller gearing. Students of senior grades, and post-graduate students take part in all these researches. A number of students and their chiefs were awarded with honourable letters and diplomas of the Ministry of education and science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In the process of the development of the chair there were opened new specialities. In 1970 there was the first enrollment to speciality "Mechanical engineering", graduates of this speciality received the qualification «engineer - teacher». Opening of this speciality was due to the shortage of experts in the system of vocational training of workers for mechanical engineering.
Graduates of this speciality, alongside with high professional training, received necessary pedagogical training, which was carried out by the chair of pedagogics and Russian.
In 1997 for the first time in Kazakhstan new speciality «Standardization and certification » was opened.
During its existence the chair «Technology of mechanical engineering» prepared more than 2300 experts working in various regions of Kazakhstan, countries of CIS and abroad.
Now in the structure of the chair there are 26 workers: a professor, a doctor of technical sciences, 9 senior lecturers, a candidate of technical sciences, 7 senior teachers, 3 teachers, 4 engineers, a training foreman and the head of the laboratory. At the chair 2 trainees, 1 undergraduate student, 1 post-graduate day-time form student , 1 post-graduate correspondence form student and 2 competitors are trained.
The teachers of the chair constantly raise the level of their skill, that allows to graduate competent engineers-experts. For the perfection of the educational process there have been introduced rating control, test control, including electronic testing.
The computerization of the educational process covers practically all disciplines of the chair. It is enough to tell, that the teachers create 49 packages of applied programs for personal computers, 2 electronic textbooks. The educational plans for graduating specialities stipulate continuous computer training of students. The chair is equipped with a computer class.
It is necessary to note, that for the last 10 years the material base of the chair was considerably extended: there were acquired machine tools with numerical programmed control, modern devices and tools, goniometer, noise measuring instrument, digital measuring tools and many others.
At the chair there exist scientific, industrial and educational connections with other higher schools, industrial enterprises, research institutes, that provides an opportunity to improve the professional skill of the professorial-teaching staff and the employment of the chair graduates.
The chair "Technology of mechanical engineering" is a base for the Standardization, metrology and certification centre.
