The chair of chemistry was formed in 1953, and in 1995 on its base the chair of industrial ecology and chemistry was organized. The precondition of its forming became the necessity to attract attention to the questions of ecological education, and also increasing demand for engineers - ecologists capable to solve problems of environment protection and rational use of natural resources at manufactures and in various spheres of live activity.
Today at the chair there are 17 persons of professor-teaching staff.
Now the chair carries out training of students in three specialities: «Applied ecology (in branches)», «Engineering protection of environment» and «Concentration of mineral resources». The last one s opened after a long break in 2001, since 1993 the chair has been training engineers - ecologists. For all the period of existence the chair trained more than 500 engineers. The training of students is conducted on day time and correspondence forms of training in the Kazakh and Russian languages. The chair has an opportunity to render services on reception of the second speciality: engineer - ecologist or engineer-concentrator by the experts who have higher vocational training. The professor-teaching staff of the chair carries out two base courses for all engineering specialities, such as chemistry and ecology, advice on performance of the unit «Industrial ecology» is also given within the framework of the degree designing for all the graduates of the KSTU. The teachers of the chair carry out work, first of all, in ecological education of the students of the University.
The basic directions of the scientific activity of the chair are the questions of working out methods, processes and devices for conditioning water, dust and gas-purification; processing of manufacture and consumption wastes; working out ways to decrease toxicity of ICE exhausted gases, dust removal at drilling-and-blasting on opencasts, overload and moving mined rocks, and air removal from the working zone. During the existence of the chair some monographies were issued; more than 20 proceedings, including students’ participation are annually published. In total during the existence of the chair its professorial-teaching staff published more than 200 proceedings, more than 40 copyright certificates and patents were received. As a result of introduction of new technical solutions at many industrial objects the level of its ecological safety considerably increased. The teachers of the chair regularly participate in the work of international conferences and symposiums, seminars and exhibitions. In 2000-2002 the experts of the chair signed and executed economic contracts on the research of ecological orientation activity for the sum 3.25 million tenge.
Great attention is also given to students’ science: at the chair four students’ scientific circles function; the trainees participate in scientific conferences held at the KSTU and other higher schools of the city and the republic on ecological subjects, which represent the publication on the average 20 reports annually; each year they take part in the Republican competition of the Ministry of education and science of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the best research students’ work in higher schools in natural sciences and are awarded with thankful letters and diplomas.
