Chair of the Russian and foreign languages
The chair of the Russian and foreign languages was formed in 1953 on the base of the Karaganda Mining Institute.
Originally at the chair there was taught only English, but in 1955 and 1958 German and French began to be taught, and the students having left school with the state language of teaching had to learn Russian.
The first contacts with foreign students were realized in 1976, and then there appeared elements of information system management in foreign languages teaching.
The collective of the chair consists of 29 teachers, among them 2 professor-assistants, 10 senior teachers, 15 assistants.
During 60-s the Club of English songs fans” began working. The task of the club was to propagate the English language and to develop a dialogue in this language. The organizers of the Club created a special group of students - enthusiasts named "Elite". They were pioneers in the learning of English. At the same time the large popularity was gained by the club of international friendship “Prometey”. In 1968 the chair took part in the Republican scientific and technical conference, where 4 reports were made in the English and German languages.
In 1974 at the chair a students’ translation bureau was organized. With its help the students read the literature on speciality in the original language, wrote small abstracts, the most successful students made reports. By the way of the students’ translation bureau there was begun practical realizing of inter-subject connections with the special chairs of the Institute. As a result of such cooperation there were received numerous honourable letters, which students were awarded with.
Besides due to the translations, which were prepared in the bureau many graduates were able to defend diplomas in English.
Students learned foreign languages with great interest. They made reports in foreign languages, certainly, their majority were mastering foreign languages at the level of dialogue, i.e. practically.
In 1978 in Karaganda there was held a conference of CART. During 1.5 months the teachers of the chair learned medical vocabulary to participate in the CART as interpreters. It was the first experience for the teachers of higher school in a large foreign audience, and, though the teachers - interpreters were used to the technical terminology, it did not prevent from the useful dialogue: foreign visitors successfully kept the dialogue with the experts of the technical higher school.
Since 1993 the chair has successfully been cooperating with the International Service of Training (Institute of the English language) of California. On the contract base the paid courses of training spoken English for students were organized. For 6 years of this dialogue more than 200 students have received the certificates about attending of the courses. This fact is remarkable: it has allowed many of them to defend diplomas in English, to pass successfully the candidates’ examinations, to be engaged in translation practice. A number of the students have had an opportunity to be trained abroad.
Alongside with the said forms of the work, the traditional means, checked up by practice, there are used annual language Olympiads, competitions for the best translation; newspapers in foreign languages are issued.
In 1995 at the chair there appeared some students - foreigners from Turkey and Mongolia. For the successful studying of technical disciplines the manual “Russian as foreign” was published.
As a positive result of large methodical work of the chair there is the fact that at the chair there has been working a seminar for training the University employees for passing a candidate’s examination on foreign languages. With this purpose there has been made a special training program.
Such themes, as "Search of new forms and methods of practical studies of a foreign language", "Traditional forms and methods of teaching foreign languages"; "Introduction of new teaching technologies into educational process " (correspondence form of foreign languages training); “Electronic textbook for students of correspondence course” were worked out.
Alongside with the traditional methods of teaching languages such active forms as round-table discussions and mini-conferences are widely introduced into practice.
At the chair there is a laboratory of oral speech, where students can hear and see necessary educational material on audio and video cartridges. Besides there is a computer class, as well as a methodical room, where teaching-and--methodical materials are kept.
