Museum
The scientific library of the KSTU was formed in 1953 in the Mining Institute.
At present the scientific library is one of the largest in Central Kazakhstan region. Its fund numbers about 1.550,000 papers. The main volume of its fund includes home publications of wide engineering profile in the Kazakh, Russian, foreign languages. Every year they subscribe to 450 names of magazines, 7-9 thousand books enter the fund.
The library is situated in four educational buildings, it has 6 loan points, 8 reading halls, the area of the store-house is 1637 sq.m. During a year all the points serve about 21000 readers, the average calling on number is 280000, book giving out is 600-700 thousands.
Besides the loan points and reading halls, providing better access and maximally wide fund using the readers can use the services of the Interlibrary loan system, traditional and electronic catalogues. The readers can use the CD collection. In the library there work 40 specialists.

Books funds and collections
The library fund numbers 1.554,583 copies in five languages and is universal by its composition, polytechnic profile is prevailing.
The great value in the fund presents scientific works, notes, conference materials, reports of the largest institutes, branch institutes, Science academies, their branches and departments, as well as museums, laboratories, libraries. The fund has the separated mass and numbers about 22000 volumes.
Since 1962 the library has been completing the fund of unpublished papers: dissertation works, defended at the university, scientific-and-research work reports (5740 issues). The fund of patents numbers 913000 papers including a collection of inventions from 1927 to 1969 on microfilms and microfishes (820000). The normative-and-technical documentation numbers 23000, state standards – 19000.
The library is an official archive of the University printing office publications, as well as the University scientists’ articles, published in the central publishing house, collects publications about the University in the republican press.
An integral part of the library fund is scientific-and-technical periodicals. Here there are 872 magazine names stored from 1956, as well as a collection of ancient books of the end of the XIX-the beginning of the XX centuries, books on classical philosophy, history of economic science, art, architecture, sports, music, language study, belles-lettres, regional studies materials.
In the library there are stored a collection of gramophone disks, of miniature books, books with autographs, private books collections, presented by the University scientists and by the engineering intelligentsia of the city, many rare books being among them.
Since 1996 the CD-ROM has been completed. It consists of journals, apexes to text-books and monographs, invention descriptions, and other documents. There are completed cassettes of teaching films.
In the 90-s in the conditions of transfer to the market relations, the rector administration exercises many efforts to the stable increasing of the library funds, considerable widening of the bought publications contents.
Kazakhstan having become a sovereign state, buying the regional studies publications including in the Kazakh language began increasing.
In the library there are organized and held different kinds of catalogues, differing from each other in their volume, contents, and structure: alphabetic readers’ and official, systematic, of regional studies, alphabetic catalogue of periodicals, one of the literature in Kazakh, number students’ catalogue, one of the scientific-and-research works of the KSTU workers, catalogues of auxiliary funds.
A new stage in the catalogue system development begins in the end of the 90-s. New publications of the universal classification tables have been got, the catalogue structure has been edited, new sections and subsections have been introduced. Every year up to 400 subject sections are opened in the Alphabetic-and-subject reference book.
Having introduced the automated library information system “Irbis” with the working places of a completer, catalogue maker and systemizer the work to make automated library-and-bibliographical processes of literature treatment and catalogue making, the way of a book to a reader decreased, the searching functions of the catalogues increased greatly.
Library technologies automation
Since 1989 the library has been dealing with the library processes automation on the base of PC. Primarily there has been put the task to form an electronic catalogue to the library fund. At present it is fully realized on PC using automated system ASPID. The catalogue includes 82000 documents and reflects the main library fund. In the 90-s automation was developed most of all. The machine park was increased, there have appeared printers, scanners, Xeroxes. In these years there have been formed the main bibliographical databases, and electronic catalogues, which are used from the first thousand of documents: the catalogue of book-provision, the catalogue of disciplines, alphabetic catalogue of periodicals.
At present the library departments and studies form electronic databases to the specialized parts of funds. There has been formed a database “Abstracts to dissertations” (7000 names), the work has been carrying out to form a database “Standards” (8000 records).
There have been bought full-text databases: “Legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan”, in Kazakh and Russian; Patents of Kazakhstan, media means “Kirill and Mefody” , English periodicals EBSCO database.
Since 2000 in the library there has been introduced an integrated library-information system Irbis which allowed to automate the processes of publications completing and treatment. Further there will be used all the possibilities of the Irbis system, including readers’ serving.
In the library there are 10 PCs, connected to the local network of the University Intranet, and users can work in any display class or study.
Since 1996 readers have got a possibility to enter Internet in the internet-class of the University. In the web-site there is a University page where you can find information about the library and its information resources, including electronic databases: an electronic catalogue, a catalogue of dissertation abstracts, articles, periodicals, as well as bibliographic lists: rare books, miniature books, teaching-and- methodic literature; monographs and publications of the KSTU scientists, collections of articles, proceedings of conferences, doctors’ dissertations defended in the KSTU (1991-2001).
Information and mass work
The library keeps on constant ties with the public society. In press there are published materials about the library activities, about the events held, services rendered. There are information-and-advertising publications, there are held excursions about the library, there is kept a connection with the leading libraries of the city.
The library is a member of the Kazakh association of institute libraries, Association on collaboration with international, state and other institutions, Information consortium of the libraries of Kazakhstan.
In the archive there stored advertisements, posters, albums as a memory of the most interesting events. Every year there are organized 30-40 stationary and movable book expositions where there are demonstrated about 5,500 books. There are held 30-50 bibliographic reviews of literature.
Unforgettable impressions were left after the meetings with the guests of the library – actors and writers, lawyers and doctors, scientists, journalists, painters, architects, region researchers. They were: D.Kunayev, M.Imashev, A.Saginkv, E.Buketov, A.Aziev, and others. The books with autographs are the memory about these meetings.

Reference-and-bibliographical, information service
Reference-and-bibliographical and information servicing is based on the database of the electronic catalogue and card-catalogues; there are suggested: lists on different subjects, CD-ROM, video-films to help the teaching process, reports about the of e-mail address.
The library publishes reference books “Scientific works of the KSTU professor-and-teaching staff and workers”, thematic reference books, recommendation lists, notes, etc to help the teaching, training and scientific processes.
The library publishes 10-12 abstract bulletins of new literature in lists and sends them to the chairs by e-mail.
Information servicing is being conducted for the 17 members in 22 subjects. These are the rector administration, faculties’ deans. Each of them can use the information resources of the library.
A special attention is paid to forming information culture of the students. The library holds library-and-bibliographic lessons and consultation for all the categories of readers. At the lessons on using the reference apparatus we must show possibilities of the electronic catalogue, attract attention to that one can use it in the computer classes of the University.
